By presidential proclamation June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, and it's also the second anniversary of the San Joaquin Pride Center, which is tucked into a small space on N. Sutter Street in Stockton.

It took until October 2011 for the doors to open, but the idea had formed from a friendly discussion at a Memorial Day barbecue.

"The topic came up of the state of the LGBT community in the county," said Nicholas Hatten, founding director of the Pride Center. "Somebody said other areas have pride centers and how unfortunate we didn't. It started this whole conversation that turned into tears and laughter about how important the community support is, how challenging it can be at times to be gay. It wasn't until a few weeks later when I realized that I could, instead of complaining about a problem, be a part of the solution.
