When Nicholas Hatton had his own Academy Awards-watching party and invited family, his mother's failure to pay close enough attention meant she didn't get future invites.

The director of San Joaquin Pride Center is less discriminating about who he watches the Oscars with at the Pride Center's Red Carpet Gala, now in its third year and set to begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at French 25 Restaurant in downtown Stockton.

Stockton Poet Reads Work

Shamir Kali Griffin, a 24-year-old Stockton poet, gives a reading of his work tonight at the San Joaquin Pride Center.

An Oakland native and graduate of Edison High School, San Joaquin Delta College and California State University, Bakersfield, he starts his free presentation at 5:30 p.m. at 109 N. Sutter St. in Stockton.

Pride honors

Byron Roberts is a little mystified at having been chosen by the San Joaquin Pride Center to receive its Legacy Award for a lifetime of advocating on behalf of the LGBT community.

By presidential proclamation June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, and it's also the second anniversary of the San Joaquin Pride Center, which is tucked into a small space on N. Sutter Street in Stockton.

It took until October 2011 for the doors to open, but the idea had formed from a friendly discussion at a Memorial Day barbecue.
